Great post and very good
recommendations. You covered
all angles (mindset, sales,
marketing, self-discipline/

of the first books, anyone
thinking of going into business

by Malcolm Gladwell. And that
is because not everything will go
smooth and you have to have
the right mindset not to quit.
Outliers is one of those types of

“Seduce Your Customers” –
explains how to market your

people fall in love. Love at first
sight – you have to build a
beautiful brand and be at the
right place at the right time.
Starbucks and Apple understand

Great list, I’ve already got a
good portion of the list and will

How to win friends and influence

and frank Bettger has been a
pleasant discovery for me, too.
I’m currently getting through
about 2 to 3 books a week

worth getting the audio version.

Nice List Ryan, I purchased
nearly all the books on the list

those for my employees aswell.
One book that I find essential for
entrepreneurs is tititled “Nail it

and Venture Capitalist and
managing director of Alta
Ventures, Paul Ahlstrom.
It provides the most indepth a to

Thank you for compiling this
great list of books! When I read
your request for suggestions, I
immediately thought of “Building
a StoryBrand: Clarify Your
Message So Customers Will
Listen” by Donald Miller. It
speaks about getting to the
heart of what motivates
customers, and is full of great
examples and walks you through
the 7 steps of attracting
customers.
I recently purchased “The Native
Advertising Advantage: Build
Authentic Content That

pretty informative about a more

Thanks a bunch for the
suggestions! I’m starting a
business with a friend of mine
and we’re trying to learn as
much as possible. I figured
getting some books would help
immensely. I’ll probably pick
four or five from this list to start
with.

“Seduce Your Customers” –
explains how to market your
product or service the same way
people fall in love. Love at first
sight – you have to build a
beautiful brand and be at the
right place at the right time.
Starbucks and Apple understand
what it to encourage their
customers to be married through
the brand. The books takes you
through a dating life-cycle curve
that showcases how you should
market your product or service
based on your relationship with
your customer.

Great list, I’ve already got a
good portion of the list and will
get some of the others you
listed, some were already in my
wish list and others are now on
it. I agree with others that the e
myth is a worthwhile contender.
How to win friends and influence
people is always on my top list
and frank Bettger has been a
pleasant discovery for me, too.
I’m currently getting through
about 2 to 3 books a week
(sometimes the same book a
few times). If you spend a lot of
time in the car, like I do, it’s
worth getting the audio version.
Audible let’s you switch between
kindle and audio seemlessly.

The Four Steps to the Epiphany
by Steve Blank outlines the
different stages of
entrepreneurial growth and sets
a framework to understand the
challenges at each stage. If you
want a path to determining if
your idea is a “vision or
hallucination,” The Startup
Owner’s Manual by Blank and
Dorf is a detailed step-by-step
process to a viable business
model before you burn through
your cash. Blank is now using
his methodology in partnership
with the Dept of Defense and
State Department to solve the
nation’s most challenging
problems – and all that process

If I could add to this tremendous
list, granted, I am biased, but I
just co-authored “Memos to
Dan: Entrepreneurial Lessons
from a Father to his
Son” (available on Amazon) with
my brother, Todd, a small
business entrepreneur. Memos
to Dan recounts real-life stories
across the range of managerial
and leadership situations a
typical small business owner
finds themselves. The practical
experiences and advice are set
within an overall business
framework to fully assist in the
establishment of a successful
investment of time, effort and
personal capital for those
contemplating launching their
own idea. Please check us out

Nice List Ryan, I purchased
nearly all the books on the list
and even purchased some of
those for my employees aswell.
One book that I find essential for
entrepreneurs is tititled “Nail it
then Scale it” By Dr. Nathan Furr
and Venture Capitalist and
managing director of Alta
Ventures, Paul Ahlstrom.
It provides the most indepth a to
z methodology for lean startups.
Infact I found it to be better than
Eric Rieses book (which was still
awesome)
Keep up the good work. Great
reference for entrepreneurs.

I applaud your dedication, but I

Ryan, the BEST sales & selling
book of the year is, without a
doubt — “The Essential Sales
Guide for Entrepreneurs and
Business Owners” by Beverly
Flaxington. This is the ‘flys &
grounders’ training for
salesmanship that business
founders/owners lack. It’s very
readable and is chock-full of
actionable information.

Amazing list of books and I own
many of them.
Love Malcolm Gladwell’s work,
Cialdini, Duhigg…..however, what
about women – ex. Multipliers:
How the Best Leaders Make
Everyone Smarter (Liz Wiseman)
and, definitely, Blue Ocean Shift
and Blue Ocean Strategy by
Renee Mauborgne and Kim
Chan. I have heard presentations
by Liz and Renee and they are
two brilliant women.

Thank you for compiling this
great list of books! When I read
your request for suggestions, I
immediately thought of “Building
a StoryBrand: Clarify Your
Message So Customers Will
Listen” by Donald Miller. It
speaks about getting to the
heart of what motivates
customers, and is full of great
examples and walks you through
the 7 steps of attracting
customers.
I recently purchased “The Native
Advertising Advantage: Build
Authentic Content That
Revolutionizes Digital Marketing
and Drives Revenue Growth” by
Mike Smith. I’ve just read the
first few chapters but so far it’s
pretty informative about a more
organic method of reaching
customers.

Hello, Ryan. It’s probably not
what usually happens, but I’d
love to show you something I

Besides that, I see you have
some of the books I read on
your list. So I’ll go out on a limb
and say we may like similar
books and give you a few of
mine:
Fail Fast or Win Big, B.
Schroeder
E-Myth Revisited, M. E. Gerber.
He also has E-Myth Mastery, but
I found the first one better.
Eat that frog!, B. Tracy
The authors of 22 immutable
laws of marketing also have a
book about branding. Not as
good as the first one, but still a
decent read.
The one I didn’t like at all:
Why we buy, P. Underhill

This year, I’m committed to finding and

What’s even better than just the sheer number

great suggestions from a very wide range of

These business books are great for anyone
looking to start (and grow) a business,
