OMG, Betterment just owned the Internet!

I don't know if you heard but Betterment now has a best-in-class checking and savings account attached to their investing platform. The checking account will refund ALL ATM fees AND the savings account is 2.69%, higher than anything we've seen.

Hey Jesus Blogger!

Have you wondered if you are running ahead of God on your blog?

  • Your fingers are poised to hit the "PURCHASE" button on some BIG purchase that you REALLY want...but...something...nags at you.
  • Have you made commitments to other bloggers (or your audience) that you just can't keep?
  • Did that one course that EVERYONE swears will increase your blog 100x over (and pay for itself)...just didn't, even though you went through it perfectly?

Maybe your making business decisions on your Christian blog WITHOUT the blessing of God.

While the above scenarios ARE NOT ALWAYS an indication of running ahead of God....lemme give you some definite warning signs and symptoms of the "run-ahead-itis" disease of Christian bloggers.

It's imperative that we really dig deep into our hearts (sifting through the lies of the Devil who definitely wants to keep you from blogging) and make sure we are building our blogs on a FIRM foundation of Jesus Christ.

And trust me. I'm your friend on this. I'm the queen of running ahead of God. I love making decisions, promises and dreaming big dreams. While these aren't horrible attributes for a blogger; they are some character traits I have to keep in check...daily (oh, who am I kidding...hourly!)

Here are some questions to ask yourself to test to see if you are running ahead of God.

#1 Am I Enjoying the Season I'm In?

I'm constantly reminding bloggers to remember and respect the season they are in, albeit, as a blogger, mom, wife, single, employee...whatever.

If you are finding yourself overly frustrated with you blog, not managing your household well, or dreaming of the day you can quit your day job to the point it's making you unhappy, these are signs you aren't working WITH God...but against His purposes for your life.

Emotions are important keys to reveal what's going on in our hearts. They don't dictate our actions, but they should influence them. Emotions aren't bad. They are God-given barometers for our lives.

Feeling content and happy in your specific season indicates you are following the lead of your Creator. Like a dance, things should flow relatively smoothly - emotions included. Sure, there are bound to be bumps in the road, but you should overcome them after a few steps to regain your footing.

Despite the constant need we might have to "change the world" with our words...the real change in your journey as a blogger is the change it creates in your relationship with God.

Learning to be content is VERY important character trait the LORD is trying to work in all of us...and he'll use your blog to do it.

"I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." Philippians 4:11-12

#2 Are Things Lining Up?

When you are working WITH God, in tandem with His will, things start to line up.

You meet the right people. You suddenly are blessed to purchase that ticket to that blog conference you've been dying to go to. Your husband gives you the night off to "get coffee & blog."

While it's not always a perfectly straight line to get all the proverbial ducks in a row, it should NOT look like your butting your head against the wall over and over.

I have this one scene that always plays in my head when I think about running ahead of God.

My best friend, at the time, was living with me. She desperately wanted to go to college in a certain city. She was currently attending college in the same city I was. Every night she spent all hours on Google (or maybe it was AskJeeves.com at the time. -- eek! Dating myself!) trying to figure out all the ways she could make it happen.

I don't mean to throw her under the bus, because I have DEFINITELY done the same thing...like a lot! But the scene is so vivid for me because I watched her -- it was like I was watching myself. It was a wake-up call to me.

That's what it looks like to run ahead of God...endless Google searches with no resolution.

Eventually, she DID go to the college in the city of her dreams...but it didn't necessarily come from all those late nights on Google.

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

#3 Are You Experiencing Good Fruit?

While I don't believe that every person that God calls to blog is magically going to make it big-time...there should be fruit in your labor. In some way, you should be able to measure growth. That might be in an email from a reader, an increase in followers, or money. But beware of only judging success on fame and fortune because the Bible indicates that FRUIT looks like: Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

In contrast, we should also realize that running ahead of God could look like bad fruit.

We have to remember the story of Abraham and Sarah before they had Isaac. God made them a promise, but they didn't believe it. They ran ahead of God and had a son via the handmaid Hagar. This lack of trust has had repercussions that are still playing out in our world today. Don't let that be you.

In a blogger's life, this might be a purchase made that couldn't be paid for. Or a promise made that you had to back out of.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." John 15:5-8

Solutions to Running Ahead of God

So, what are the solutions for running ahead of God? How can we STOP and wait on HIS timing?

Quickly,

Patience - just flex that muscle of enjoying the wait. Look around and ask God to show you what you are missing in THIS SEASON of life.

Fasting - sometimes the LORD is waiting to speak to us...but we are so filled with things of this world, He won't pour into us.

Trust - remember that HE called you to blog, not the other way around. The Bible says that He's faithful to complete that work began in us!

Prayer - asking God his opinion on your situation, then listening for His answer.

Hey Jesus Blogger!

I'll admit.

I've been in a blogging funk.

Lazy summer days do that. Toddlers who won't get out of your lap do that. Being confused about how/what/why you should blog does that. The fly that's buzzing around my office driving me nuts does that.

(HIT reply and tell me the things that hold you back from blogging!)

But when you are trying to run a successful blog there are some days you just need to SIT. DOWN. IN. THE. CHAIR. AND. BLOG.

Just like a morning devotional you don't want to roll outta bed to do -- even though you super love it. Or an event you signed up for with enthusiasm, but the day comes and your just not feeling it.

JUST DO IT.

We have to just sit down and blog. Even when we don't feel like it. Even when it's inconvenient.

So, that's me. Writing this super simple and short email newsletter. Blogging when "I don't wanna" (*insert whinny voice).

Reminding your flesh who's the boss is paramount to your blogging consistency; therefore, your success.

So, what are you waiting for?

🌱🌱Is This Why Your Blog Isn't Growing? Part 3🌱🌱

Hey Jesus Blogger!

This is Day 3 of my email series "Is this why your blog isn't growing?"

And if neither Day 1 or Day 2 resonated with you...don't worry I think THIS email will be the one.

  • Day 1 said: Cut out the noise.
  • Day 2 said: God's the one holding you back.
  • Day 3 is all about practical tips.

But before we get on with the practical tips. I'm going to give you a hard pill to swallow

Don't hate me. Okay?

I'm a developer and designer and a Christian. And some of the Christian blogs I see out there...they hurt me.

They have strange font. Strange images. No direction. The blog posts aren't formatted to be easily read. It's just a mess.

I'm not saying my blogs are perfect. Far, far from it...but there are some bloggers that are really upset that they are spending so much time on their blogs and not seeing success.

And my answer is...ugh...honey, I'm really sorry to say this...but your baby is ugly.

And, like, I know that shouldn't matter. Because, like, it's Jesus' message. And it's beautiful. But no.

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY:

You know when you hear a REALLY good singer at church...and then you hear an "okayish" singer...and then you hear a really bad singer.

On Sunday morning, you are really hoping it's the really good one on stage. But if she's not there you're fine listening to the okay one...but the bad one...you're wishing you'd brought some earbuds to worship.

Let's think about the singer's outfit.

We will make amends if the really good singer is wearing a burlap sack. We will make less amends if the okay singer is wearing the same burlap sack. But if the really bad singer is wearing a burlap sack, we just feel bad for her.

So...it's like this.

Your blog might be a really good singer wearing a burlap sack. Or an okay singer wearing a burlap sack. If your blog is like the last one...well, let's just hope that's not you. And if God's called you to blog, and your a bad signer in a burlap sack...he's a miracle worker...so there's that.

There are a couple ways to change out of the burlap sack into an evening gown or some other appropriate church-choir-wearing-attire.

Okay...off the burlap sack/singer analogy.

Here are a few practical thoughts for a blog that's not performing well.

1) Think Transformation

What is the transformation you are offering to your readership?

Are you helping her grow closer to God? Do you want to get her started on Bible journaling? Are you helping her overcome addiction?

Whatever transformation you are trying to take her through...make sure everything on your blog points to that. That is your lens to look through. Stop writing "low hanging fruit" posts that you think will get you pageviews.

If you are trying to help single moms...don't write blog posts about married women. It seems obvious, but many times we get caught up on what we THINK will grow our blog that we forget our main purpose.

I've written extensively on how too many topics can hurt your blog. If you need to start another blog to write about something other than your main point, that's fine. Or use them as guest blogs. Whatever. Just don't muddy the water with fluff that detracts from the transformation you are trying to deliver.

And if you are writing to single moms...what's her transformation? What's her pain point? What value are you adding to her life? What problem are you trying to solve for her.

Let every post come out of that mental transaction.

2) The F-Pattern & Online Reading

I've gone to so many blogs only to click away because I'm trying to skim it...but there is no skimmable content.

For years, people have studied how people read online.

Here is the basics of online reading:

  • In general, we read in an F-shaped pattern
  • We like lists
  • We skip large paragraphs
  • We like subheadings

If you aren't doing this...you're losing readers.

Do this exercise. On your phone, pull up ONE blog post that you know a friend/husband has never read. Ask them to skim it. Give them 30 seconds. Take your phone away from them, then ask them what the post was about.

If they aren't really getting it, go through and reformat your blog posts. Make sure it's skimmable.

3) You're Trying to Conquer Too Many Things

Facebook groups, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Tailwind, blogging, and writing emails.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase "Jack of all trades, but the master of none" right?

You just can't be everywhere all the time.

You might be doing all the things...but not doing all the things well.

Ask yourself what is the RESULT you are trying to achieve.

Then, try dropping a few thing and focusing in on only one or two things that will get those results.

I would suggest email as #1 -- because connecting with your userbase and making them superfans will get you all the things!

And #2 should be either:

  • Pinterest: if you are trying to get pageviews
  • Product Creation: if you are trying to make money. (Check out my new Shopify course if you are interested in selling products on your blog...including physical products with NO inventory)
